Mat type

– Self-inflating mat: especially convenient when you don’t want to inflate it with your mouth. Just unscrew the valve and the material inside will take in air, regaining its original, uncompressed shape. At the end, all you have to do is inflate it yourself a few times to adjust the softness of the mat.

– Inflatable mat: Extremely compact when packed and often lighter than a self-inflating mat of similar parameters. This makes inflatable mats the first choice for those who save weight and space. They can be inflated by mouth or using the included inflation bag.

– Classic camping mat: Made from a special foam, they are often called foam mats. They will take up more space than inflatable and self-inflating mats, but even if they are damaged – punctured or burned by a campfire – they will still serve you well. They are also one of the cheapest mats, so they are especially suitable for beginners.

Mat size

– Regular (“regular” or R): standard and most popular, length 183 cm, width 51 cm. Suitable for people with a smaller build and those who mostly sleep on their side.

– Regular wide (RW): Same length as regular – 183 cm, but 64 cm wide. Best for those who sleep mostly on their stomach or back or simply want more comfort.

– Extended (“large” or L): The width of this mat is identical to the extended mat and reaches 64 cm. However, its length will be 196 cm. Designed for tall and larger people or those who want maximum comfort.

Thermal resistance of the mat

The thickness of a mat is more about comfort than warmth. A thick mat is not necessarily warm. Globally recognized manufacturers use the same standard to determine the thermal resistance of a mat, which is denoted by the letter R (R value). The higher the R value, the warmer the mat. Choose the resistance of the mat based on your camping needs and habits:

– R 1-2: the least warm, but perfect for summer when the ground is warm and the nighttime air temperature does not drop below 10-15 degrees.

– R 2.2-3.5: Suitable for three seasons – late spring, summer and early fall. This is the most versatile choice for most campers.

– R 4–6: for all seasons, including winter. Also a good choice for people who are sensitive to cold even on cool summer evenings.

– R 6 and above: for extreme cold. If you plan to camp in the winter in extreme cold or spend the night in a tent at high mountain base camps, this resistance mat is for you.
